Free-2-play-ception?
Yesterday, it was announced that Age of Conan, the fantasy MMO that takes place in the world where Crom can go to hell because he can’t grant simple revenge, is now free-to-play. As always with testing the waters of the F2P market, some items and features are available to “Premium” members only, but the meat of the game is all there, ready to be enjoyed.
Oh, and I guess World of Warcraft took a dip as well. Only it’s an unlimited trial, of sorts. Rather, a trial with no time restriction. So, you can have any number of characters, but with the normal trial restrictions in place, such as the level cap of 20 and the inability to send in-game tells. A little more limiting than I would like to see in a F2P-title, but this is the MMO-cocaine that’s made Blizzard nice and comfy atop their pile of money.
Oh…wait, City of Heroes too? Okay, so it seems every MMO developer wants a delicious piece of that “Freemium-esque Pie” and why shouldn’t they? ArenaNet proved that you don’t need a monthly fee to be successful and Turbine furthered that thinking when D&D went F2P. Is this the direction MMOs are going? Is this a good or bad thing?
