Google to Release Chrome OS This Fall, With a Netbook?

Earlier this week, it was announced that Google would release its Chrome OS this autumn for free.

“We are working on bringing the device later this fall,” said Google vice president of product management Sundar Pichai at CompuTex Taipei, Asia’s biggest IT trade show. “It’s something which we are very excited by … We expect it to reach millions of users on day one,” he said.

The Operating System, which is, of course, based on Google’s browser, Chrome, is expected to be used by at least one million users on day one, which isn’t hard to believe as 70 million currently use the browser. However, to get those one million, Google might have to release the OS with some hardware, and it looks likely that’s what will happen as Sundar Pichai let that little bit of information slip at Computex 2010 on June 2.

So, apparently, it’s a good guess that Acer will partner with Google to release a Chrome OS-ready netbook this fall. Both are companies I can get behind, and I have been looking to get a netbook (or maybe an iPad? ;) ) and have been using Chrome since beta. If anything I’m excited to see how Google can compete with Microsoft.

And, well, a free OS.
