E3 2010: Sony Press Conference Recap

I know, E3 ended a few days ago. so, why am I only now getting to Sony’s press conference? Let’s be honest with each other, Sony didn’t exactly have a home-run of a show like Nintendo, or hell, not even a double like Microsoft. Don’t get me wrong, there were a few tiddbits here and there that were actually pretty cool, but you had better get ready for a whole lot of meh.

The Good

PlayStation Plus
Now, why would I but a subscription service, like PlayStation Plus, as a good thing? Because unlike a Gold account with Xbox live, there will be full PSN games available, discounts, themes and minis, and automated downloads. Also, $50 for a year? Sign me u…oh wait i don’t have a PS3. Damn.

PlayStation Move
Don’t get me wrong, I’m still no fan of motion-control gaming, but Sorcery just looks so damn fun! Then there was Heroes on the Move, which brings Jax, Sly Cooper, and Ratchet together for the first time which sounds like mayhem in a box, but in a good way. Also shown off was the 1:1 tracking of the move via Tiger Woods PGA Golf, which didn’t look too bad, if only EA Sports head of worldwide development, Andrew Wilson, would stop hitting those sand bunkers.

Twisted Metal
What a way to finish a pretty bland show! Twisted Metal is back and now I really wish I had a PS3. And what a way to announce a game than to have your mascot drive his vehicle of death up on stage. There was also a new mode shown off that’s like other team-objective modes. so yeah. Twisted Metal, it’s just so sweet.

The Bad

There wasn’t anything actually bad or terrible about Sony’s press conference this year.

The Meh

Killzone 3D
So, another Killzone game. Yay. This time, though, it’ll have 3D support, which is also cool, but not really. They also will have other games that will support 3D such as GT5, Crysis 2, and Tron Evolution. While not a bad showing of Killzone 3′s gameplay, it was all kinda “meh” for me.

Portal 2
I already plan to play this on the PC. Go away.

The PSP
It’s the PSP, I’m just surprised it hasn’t faded from existence. Okay okay, they have some nice games out and coming out for it, like the God of War games. Oh, and Patapon is always pretty sweet. It was also announced that 70 new games for the PSP will be released by December.

The Verdict

Yeah, I’m half-assing this one but it’s Sony, and I’ve never been a huge fan of Sony, but I don’t hate them, or rather I try not to, and it pays off from time to time. Easily the most lacking of the Big 3 from E3 this year, but still a good show, especially if you’re a big fan of the other titles I didn’t mention.
